When we launched Mestiers, we took the time to reflect on the role of objects — including clothing — in our lives, and the personal relationships we form with them. This ongoing reflection guides our creative process: from material sourcing and studio selection to packaging decisions and aesthetic expression.

Objects are often overlooked as cultural goods. And yet, they hold a unique power: they are at once collective expressions and carriers of personal meaning. They tell stories about who we are — both as a society and as individuals. Our garments and objects embody our experiences and personal narratives across the two countries where we produce them. We select each workshop for its ability to translate our values and vision into matter.

Why are we drawn to certain objects? Why do we cherish some possessions with the hope they’ll stay with us forever? Setting aside price tags and brand mythology — and even the emotional power of gifts — what remains is a mysterious quality we call radiance.

Every Mestiers creation begins with a meeting with a craft, a material, and the desire to explore its possibilities. After in-depth research comes the meeting with the artisan, in the heart of their workshop.

A workshop is first and foremost a soundscape: the deep percussion of looms, the sharper rhythms of copper work, the physicality of leather tanning. Softer sounds, too — the slicing of tailor’s scissors, the sanding of wood, the hum of sewing machines. And always, somewhere in the background, the latest song on the radio.

In Italian, a workshop is called a “laboratorio” — a fitting term. For us, experimentation means learning a new skill, a new vocabulary, a new way of sketching. For artisans, especially when it comes to special requests, it opens up space for innovation, hybridization, and technical breakthroughs.

We personally visit all our workshops before starting any collaboration. Many are certified by the most respected labels in the field — from Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant and Ateliers d’Art de France, to Masters of Linen, Egyptian Cotton Association, Oeko-Tex, GOTS, and GRS.
