How to take proper care of your socks to make them last

Socks are arguably the item of clothing with the shortest first life cycle compared to other accessories. They endure two main forms of wear: friction and the acidity caused by perspiration. Here are our tips to extend the life of your socks as much as possible.

Rotate your socks to reduce wear and tear

To minimize the effects of friction and perspiration, we recommend wearing a different pair of socks each day. This means you should ideally own at least a week's worth.
If you tend to sweat a lot from your feet, we suggest opting for our fine wool model. While slightly less resistant than our Scotland Lisle thread socks, it is more breathable thanks to wool’s natural thermoregulating properties.

How to wash your socks properly

All our socks are machine washable—just be sure to select a cycle suited to the sock’s composition.
We recommend using a mesh laundry bag. It keeps your pairs together and prevents a sock from getting lost in the machine. Mesh bags made from organic cotton are widely available in various sizes.

  • Scotland Lisle thread & Pima Cotton: Use the cotton or delicate cycle, with a temperature not exceeding 30°C (86°F).

  • Wool: Use the wool setting, a small amount of wool detergent or special cashmere shampoo, a temperature no higher than 30°C (86°F), and a gentle spin (max 400 rpm).

  • Always lay socks flat to dry to prevent them from losing their shape.

Washing mistakes that damage your socks

  • Do not use bleach, whitening agents, or any harsh detergent.

  • Our socks are not suitable for dry cleaning.

  • Do not iron—heat from the iron can permanently damage the shape of the socks.

How to keep your socks from slipping down your legs and bunching up around your ankles

A matter of utmost importance, as you’ll agree.

  • Choose the right size for a perfect fit
The first piece of advice is to pick the right size. At Mestiers, we offer socks that fit two sizes. Keep in mind that a 41–42 (US 9-10) is effectively a 42. Since our socks are made in Italy, where sizing tends to run slightly larger than in France, a 41–42 (US 9-10) will feel like a generous 42 when brand new and a standard 42 after the first wash.

  • Right footwear to prevent sock slippage

When shoes don’t fit snugly around your foot, socks tend to get pulled forward as you walk, eventually sliding down around your ankle. A well-fitting shoe that offers proper support to both the foot and ankle is key to keeping your socks in place.

  • Moisturize Your Legs for Better Sock Grip

Here’s a simple trick to keep your socks in place: apply a small amount of moisturizer to your legs before putting them on.

  • Good Footcare to Extend the Life of Your Socks

To extend the life of your socks, take care of your feet: keep them moisturized, and make sure your toenails are neatly trimmed.

  • Flat Storage: The Best Way to Store Your Socks
We do not recommend rolling your socks into balls. This can distort the sock’s cuff, causing it to widen. The ideal way to store them is flat—pair them up and fold them gently together, just like they were when you first purchased them.

Why every stylish man should wear over-the-calf socks

A timeless staple of the elegant man’s wardrobe, over-the-calf socks are something of an institution in Italy. This tall sock, which reaches just below the knee and features what we call an “English cuff” for a secure fit, is the appropriate choice when wearing a suit.
If you often wear tailored trousers that ride up when seated, over-the-calf socks are essential to prevent any unwanted glimpse of bare skin. Let’s keep those calves discreetly covered, shall we?
